Saturday is National Chess Day. For the first time in the nation an event on this day will be held just for veterans.

In Birmingham, the Birmingham Veterans Medical Center (VAMC) will host a free chess event for veterans. The VAMC tournament is open to all veterans; beginner chess players are welcomed. The event is scheduled from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at the Birmingham Veterans Medical Center, 700 19th street South in the first floor Garden Room.

During the event, international chess instructor and VAMC chess and mind sports coach Michael Ciamarra will present a proclamation from the office of Governor Robert Bentley declaring October 12 National Chess Day in Alabama.

President Gerald R. Ford declared the second Saturday in October to be National Chess Day in 1975.
